British Values
Hitchin Girls’ School recognises the multi-cultural, multi-faith and ever-changing nature of the United Kingdom. It also understands the vital role it has in ensuring that groups or individuals within the school are not subjected to intimidation or radicalisation by those wishing to unduly, or illegally, influence them.
The Government emphasises that all UK schools must ensure that key ‘British Values’ are taught. The definition of British Values is set out in the Government's ‘Prevent Strategy’.
The five British Values are:
- Democracy
- The rule of law
- Individual liberty
- Mutual respect
- Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
At Hitchin Girls’ School we actively promote the five British Values. These are fundamental to the ethos of the school and the ways we work with and treat each other. They are evident in our House and Year systems, the appointment of our Prefect Body, our School Council elections and their meetings, our Behaviour for Learning policy (including our Charter of Respect), our regular assemblies, our charitable work, our Philosophy and Ethics programme and our many links with the local and wider community.
British Values are also promoted throughout the curriculum both within and outside lessons, and through discrete Learning for Life lessons (PSHEC) and Tutor Time activities. Hitchin Girls’ School has also been accredited with the International Schools Award, and works in partnership with schools overseas to teach students about life in other countries and develop them as global citizens.
In summary, Hitchin Girls’ School strives to ensure that all students receive a broad and balanced experience that helps prepare them for life in modern Britain. The aim is for students to leave Hitchin Girls’ School with the strongest foundation of values from which to build a successful life and make a positive contribution to society.
