SCHOOL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Good afternoon,

It has been a busy week with two open mornings, the Year 11 Geography fieldtrip to Sheringham, Addams Family auditions and much more, concluding with possibly the wettest Jeans for Genes day in the school's history! Thank you to all the students who baked for this event (pictures below).

The first two of our open mornings were incredibly successful and I lost count of the visitors that commented on how fantastic the students are. I would like to extend my particular thanks to all the students who helped with the tours and welcomed the Year 6s and their families into school.

Despite some periods of wet weather, the Year 11s had a successful trip to Sheringham - they were quick to tell me how hard they had worked and they were very pleased that their investigations into long-shore drift, amongst other things, had been fruitful. Thanks to Mr Sutton and all the staff who supported the students on the visit.

From next week the school will be engaged in activities to mark Black History Month - I would like to thank Soraya, Julia, Sehrish and Dajore for putting together a fantastic presentation, which will be shared with all students during tutor time.

Also next week, we have our final open morning on Wednesday, and then the week closes with an early finish for students - a reminder that the school is closed to students from lunchtime on Thursday and all day on Friday for staff INSET.

Have a good weekend.

James Crowther, Headteacher

The Jeans for Genes day bake sale had queues of customers at breaktime today - thank you to all those who baked for their efforts!

Safety First

Year 7 started their learning in Computing this term by looking at how to stay safe online. Here are a few of the presentations they put together - great start, Year 7!

And some general tips for all of us to stay safe online:

Meet our LSA team

As it's National Inclusion Week, we wanted to give some insight into the work of the Learning Support Team, which is made up of nine LSAs, the SENCO, Assistant SENCO and Inclusion Administrator. A day in the life of the team could include:

✴️ Meeting 1-1 with students first thing to ensure that they are ready for learning.

✴️ Adapting resources to ensure that the students understand the learning in the classroom.

✴️ Running lunchtime Homework and Take a Break clubs to support learning and social interactions.

✴️ Working in a range of different lessons to support the classroom learning.

✴️ Providing support to students who are struggling to regulate so that they feel safe in the school environment.

✴️ Completing key worker check-ins to ensure students are sharing their thoughts about support needed.

✴️ Delivering 1-1 or small-group intervention sessions for literacy or social skills.

✴️ Small-group study support.

✴️ Supporting teaching staff to understand the adaptations needed to help students in the classroom.

✴️ Completing referral paperwork to ensure support is sought where required.

✴️ Bespoke interventions depending on the needs of the students which are built in line with their EHCPs - this might include Lego communication group, dance interventions, or practical skills development - to name just a few options.

The team are excited to continue working with our students this academic year and we welcome communication from families where additional support might help students thrive at school.

GCSE Health & Social Care

These cute creations were a product of students looking at different creative and therapeutic activities, including sensory, cognitive, expressive and physical therapies. They are considering what types of therapies are appropriate for different conditions and ages, and the benefits that can be gained. They have covered hypnotherapy, reflexology, reiki and mindfulness techniques, and have tried out aromatherapy, hand-massage, yoga and tai chi. This activity involved looking at types of sensory art therapies and thinking about how younger service users and those with disabilities can benefit.

Year 7 Music

Another lovely video from the Music department - as part of their Find Your Voice topic, 7B performed an arrangement of 'Stand By Me' by Ben E. King. Enjoy!

Careers information event - can you help?

On Wednesday 27 November we are running our annual HGS Futures Fair, when students get the chance to meet and talk with employers and professionals from a range of sectors to find out about different careers.

We are looking for employers/professionals who would be happy to have a stand at the fair and talk to students about their work, especially from (but not limited to) the creative industries - Art, Design, Film, Performing Arts, Media, etc. Please spread the word - anyone who may be able to help is asked to email clare.townsend@hgs.herts.sch.uk Thank you!
