SCHOOL NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Good afternoon, Happy New Year and welcome to the first newsletter of 2025.

I hope everyone had a restful break and enjoyed time with friends and family; I also hope your children did not stand on the sidelines and were keen to help out during what is a busy time for parents and carers.

As ever, it has been great to welcome students and staff back into school this week. The Year 13s have made an impressive start to their mocks - I wish them all well for the remainder of their exams, and thank families and staff for the support they will be providing them during this period.

The term started with Years 7-11 each having a year group assembly, during which the rewards achieved and individual ‘stars of the term’ for Autumn were celebrated. I challenge all students to achieve as many reward points as possible in the coming term with the aim of surpassing last term’s total; I look forward to celebrating their future successes and achievements.

Year 11s have started their Sixth Form interviews this week and I have had the pleasure of meeting with a number of students from 11J; it is always inspiring to hear students’ ideas about their futures and the interviews have been a great opportunity to celebrate some individual successes in their recent mock exams too.  All Year 11s are now busy planning their revision schedules and it is positive to see such high levels of engagement with the support on offer.

Next week is a big week for Year 9s, with the start of their Options assemblies, Talk the Talk day and also parents’ evening.

Have a great weekend.

James Crowther, Headteacher

A reminder that new HGS uniform can be purchased from Smarty Schoolwear (from their Stevenage store and online), as well as from Beat's in Hitchin.

Another reminder - all students need to be bringing in headphones as part of their equipment.

Thank you Elodie and Lisa in Year 12 who put together the January Diversity Display! This month we will be reflecting on setting positive goals for 2025, as well as raising awareness for Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. Later in January, we will be marking Holocaust Memorial Day, 80 years on from the end of WW2. Plus there are lots of religious and cultural festivals coming up - the Mahayana Buddhist New Year is on 14th January, and the Chinese Year of The Snake begins on the 29th.

We are pleased to be able to offer another two excellent Careers opportunities over the coming weeks, thanks to ELSA Next Generation whom we’ve worked with for some years.

Year 11: ‘Get Work Ready’ - Thursday 23 January

Year 9: ‘Engage Advance Achieve’ Thursday 6 February

Both of these include interview and job application challenges based on current real-world recruitment practices, giving students an appreciation of the qualities and skills sought by today’s employers.

Working individually and in teams, students will tackle ‘out of the box’ tasks, customer service activities, practical and written exercises and mock interviews, and will then benefit from real and honest feedback from the employers taking part.

We would love to hear from any parents/guardians who are interested in volunteering as an interviewer, interviewee, speaker or workshop facilitator on one of these dates.

Please complete this form and we will pass your details to ELSA, who will contact you directly:
